This huge international bestseller, revised for non-American readers in this 2008 edition, shows how our children have become increasingly alienated and distant from nature, why this matters, and what we can do to make a difference. It is unsentimental, rigorous and utterly original. Camping in the garden, riding bikes through the woods, climbing trees, collecting bugs, picking wildflowers, running through piles of autumn leaves...These are the things childhood memories are made of. But for a whole generation of today's children the pleasures of a free-range childhood are missing, and their indoor habits contribute to epidemic obesity, attention-deficit disorder, isolation and childhood depression. "Last Child in the Woods" is a clarion call, brilliantly written, compelling and irresistibly persuasive - a book that will change minds and lives. |
In Spark, Ratey shows how learning is enhanced when preceded by exercise. Ratey believes exercise enhances school performance and cites the Naperville, Illinois school where pre-school physical activity has boosted reading ability. He shows how physical activity sparks biological changes that encourage brain cells to bind to one another. These connections reflect the brain’s fundamental ability to adapt to challenges. Aerobic activity also has a dramatic effect on adaptation, regulating systems that might be out of balance. Spark is a groundbreaking exploration of the connection between exercise and the brain’s performance that shows how even moderate exercise will supercharge mental circuits to beat stress, sharpen thinking, enhance memory, and much more. A classic |

In the beginning was ... Silver Bullets
The original Silver Bullets book (1984) was a compilation of a quarterly publication called Bag of Tricks written and edited by Karl Rohnke. The difference between publication dates (1984 & 2009) - twenty-five years) represented an ideal span of time to kindle a "Silver" anniversary edition that could take advantage of all those years of experience and facilitation. Karl approached the re-writing task as a labor of love, attempting to "pepper" the new edition with that knowledge gained through experience over the quarter century, at the same time making sure to preserve those creative flights of fantasy that established the original book as a classic in its field. (Over 200,000 copies printed.) Anticipate new photos, programmatic retakes, historical vignettes, thoughtful variations, tongue-in-cheek humor, compassionate deletions … with the addition of 14 unique games and initiatives. There are tons of games and initiative books currently on the market, but which book started the trend? Silver Bullets! Stick with a winner. |
